The Workflow Reference Model was developed already 1995 by the Workflow management Coalition (WfMC) and describes the interfaces in a Workflow management system. With the help of this reference model can be arranged complex systems from different modules of different manufacturers.
It essentially goes thereby around four (formerly five) interfaces of a Workflow Enactment services - the service to the Initierung and execution from Workflow Engines. Interface 1 serves the exchange of the process definition (XPDL), 2 and 3 of the integration of Workflow Client Applications and/or Invoked Applications, 4 of interoperability with strange Enactment services (Wf-XML) and 5 of the administration and monitoring.
